Wall art: scale first, style second

The most common wall art mistake is buying something too small. A single piece above a sofa or bed should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it; if a piece you like is smaller, hang it as part of a set of three rather than alone. Metal wall art is popular for exactly this reason: a three-piece set covers a wide wall for the price of one framed print, has no glass to break in shipping, and hangs on a couple of nails.

Check the finish against the room's metals. Matte black scrollwork suits farmhouse and industrial rooms and reads well against pale walls; gold or brass tones warm up a neutral room. Before buying an over-the-sink dish rack, measure the sink width and the distance to the tap, since the rack has to clear both. Small appliances worth the counter space

A short list of gadgets earns permanent counter or drawer space because they do one job faster than the alternative: an egg cooker that produces six perfect soft-boiled eggs without watching a pot, an electric plunger that clears a blocked toilet with air pressure instead of a wet mess, a neck massager with heat for the end of a desk day. The test is the same as elsewhere in this guide: will it be used at month six? Cook eggs weekly, buy the cooker. Otherwise, a pot works.

UV lamps deserve a note of caution. A UVC lamp with ozone can sanitize a room, but only when nobody, including pets and plants, is in it, and the room needs airing afterwards. Follow the timer and do not treat it as a daytime air purifier.

Decor that survives a move

Candle holders, artificial wreaths and seasonal accents are the pieces people re-buy every year because the previous ones were cheap and broke. Spend a little more once: solid metal candlesticks rather than hollow ones, a wreath with a wire frame rather than foam, a shower bench in teak-look wood with a weight rating rather than an unrated plastic stool. Each of those is a decade purchase instead of a season purchase.

Bathroom and utility: the unglamorous winners

A corner shower bench is the purchase people describe as life-changing and never think to buy for themselves: it makes shaving, washing feet and simply resting in the shower safe, especially for older family members. Look for a weight rating and rubber feet, and choose a teak-look or solid resin over hollow plastic. A trash can dolly with wheels stops the can from scraping the floor and makes cleaning behind it a five-second job. An electric plunger uses air pressure so that clearing a blockage does not mean a wet mess. None of these will impress guests. All of them get used weekly.

Lighting the wall, and where things go wrong

Metal wall art looks best with light raking across it so the shapes cast shadows. A small picture light above the piece or a lamp to one side does more for it than a bright overhead. Avoid hanging metal art where direct sun hits it all afternoon; some finishes fade over a couple of summers. And leave a little more space than feels natural between pieces in a set; crowding is the second most common mistake after buying too small.
