Rated capacity is measured at the battery's own voltage, and some is lost converting to the 5 volts your phone takes. As a rule of thumb, expect about 60 to 70 percent of the rating to reach the phone: a 10,000 mAh bank charges a typical phone roughly twice, a 20,000 mAh bank four times. If you only need a top-up on a day out, a slim 10,000 mAh bank is lighter and fits a pocket; the 20,000 mAh class is for travel and for people who charge a tablet too.

Output matters as much as capacity. Look for the wattage on the port, not just the amperage. Twenty watts or more over USB-C Power Delivery charges a modern phone quickly; five watts over an old USB-A port takes all evening. If the bank has a wireless pad on top, treat it as a convenience for overnight, not a fast option.

Chargers and cables: match the standard, not the brand

Fast charging only happens when the charger, the cable and the phone agree on a standard. For most phones from the last few years that standard is USB-C Power Delivery. A braided USB-C cable rated for 60 W or 100 W covers phones, tablets and many laptops, and the braid is what stops the jacket splitting at the plug after a year of bending. For the car, a multi-port USB charger lets a passenger charge too; the total wattage is shared between the ports, so a single device charges fastest.

Wireless charging is slower and warmer than a cable but wins on convenience: a stand on the nightstand or a magnetic charger in the car means the phone is always topped up without fiddling. Check the pad is Qi certified and, for magnetic stands, that your case is magnet-compatible.

Mounts and stands: the clamp is the whole product

A car mount is only as good as its grip on the phone and its grip on the car. Vent clips are quick but sag with heavy phones; dash and windshield mounts with a suction cup hold better through summer heat if the surface is cleaned first. Magnetic mounts are the cleanest to use one-handed but need a metal plate or a magnetic case. On the desk, a stand that adjusts in height and angle stops you hunching over the screen on video calls.

If the phone shows a temperature warning, stop charging and move it into shade; that warning is the battery protecting itself. In winter the opposite applies: a very cold phone may refuse to charge until it warms up, which is normal.

What kills cables, and how to make them last

Cables fail at the plug, almost never in the middle. Pulling the cord instead of the connector, bending it sharply against the phone in a pocket, and winding it tightly around a brick all crack the strain relief. A braided jacket resists that abuse; a right-angle connector helps if the phone charges while in use. Keep one cable per place, such as bed, desk and car, rather than carrying one everywhere, because the carrying is what wears it out. Cables are cheap enough that buying three good ones beats replacing one bad one three times.
