Pet Supplies Buying Guide: Beds, Bottles, Brushes and Harnesses That Get Used

Start with the daily items, not the fun ones

The gear that earns its keep is the gear you touch every day: a water source, a brush, something to sleep on, and something to walk with. Toys and costumes are the pleasant part of pet shopping, but if the harness pulls or the bowl tips, you will notice it twice a day for years. Budget for the daily items first and buy the fun items with whatever is left.

A useful test before you add anything to the cart: picture the item at month six. Is it still being used, or has it been replaced by the thing you should have bought in the first place? Cooling mats, water bottles and grooming brushes pass that test for almost every owner. Novelty feeders and single-purpose gadgets usually do not.

Water: fountains for the house, bottles for the walk

Cats in particular drink more from moving water, and a fountain with a large reservoir means fewer refills. Look for a capacity around 90 to 100 ounces if you have more than one animal, a filter you can actually buy replacements for, and a pump that can be taken apart and rinsed. The parts you cannot clean are the parts that grow slime.

For walks and car trips, a portable bottle with a built-in trough is the item owners rate most consistently. The mechanism matters more than the capacity: a press-to-fill button with a lock stops water sloshing out in a bag. Marketplace buyers of the bottle we carry describe exactly that, one writing that "the mechanism works perfectly, and it can lock for when you don't want water to come out", another that it "doesn't leak" and is the "perfect size for a small dog". Those are the two things to check on any bottle: the lock and the seal.

• Fountain: 90 oz or more for multi-pet homes, replaceable filters, a pump you can disassemble.
• Bottle: press button with a lock, silicone seal, a trough wide enough for the dog's muzzle.
• Skip: bowls that tip, fountains with proprietary filters you cannot find later.

Beds and mats: match the material to the season

A single bed rarely works all year. Cooling mats with a gel or breathable weave are what dogs choose in summer, especially heavy-coated breeds that sprawl on tile. In winter the same dog wants a raised edge and a plush surface to push against. If you are buying one item, an extra-large cooling mat with a washable cover covers the harder season; add a warm bed later.

Two practical checks: the cover must come off and go in a washing machine, and the base must not slide on hard floors. Sizing is the most common return reason in this category, so measure your dog lying stretched out, not curled up, and add a few inches.

Grooming: the brush that gets used is the one that cleans itself

Shedding brushes come in two useful shapes: a slicker with fine bent wires for undercoat, and a self-cleaning brush where a button retracts the pins and the hair lifts off in one sheet. The self-cleaning kind gets used far more often simply because emptying it takes one hand and two seconds. For cats, a gentler pin brush avoids the scratches a slicker leaves on thin skin.

A toothbrush kit is the grooming item most owners skip and most vets wish they would not. Dental disease is the most common condition in dogs over three, and a finger brush or long-handled brush with pet-safe paste a few times a week is the cheapest prevention there is.

Walking: no-pull harnesses and car restraints

A no-pull harness moves the leash attachment to the chest so that when the dog pulls, it turns rather than charges. Look for a front and a back clip, wide padded straps, reflective stitching for evening walks, and four points of adjustment. Sizing again decides everything: one marketplace reviewer of a harness we carry was happy with the fit on a 65 lb border collie mix but noted it was "more light weight" than expected, and a less happy buyer found the largest size too small for a big dog. Measure the chest at its widest point behind the front legs and compare it to the size chart, not the label.

For the car, a seat belt harness or clip that plugs into the buckle keeps a dog on the seat during a hard stop. Buy one that attaches to a harness, never to a collar.

Mess management: litter mats, training pads and lick mats

The unglamorous purchases save the most cleaning time. A double-layer litter mat with a honeycomb top catches litter off a cat's paws and drops it through to a tray you tip back into the box; the single-layer felt ones just move the litter around. For puppies and older dogs, disposable training pads with a quilted core and a plastic backing keep floors dry, and a stack of them costs less than one ruined rug. Lick mats are the sleeper hit here: smear a little peanut butter or wet food on one and a dog that hates bath time or nail trims stays busy for ten minutes.

Buy these in the quantities you will actually use. Training pads in packs of fifty or more are cheaper per pad, and a two-pack of lick mats means one is always clean.
